Watford Borough Council is making major improvements to Watford High Street. As part of this scheme, there will be changes made to the traffic and parking restrictions between Clarendon Road and Market Street.

The proposed changes to the traffic and parking restrictions between Clarendon Road and Market Street are detailed below.

Pedestrian zones Amendment to the current pedestrian zones are as follows:
• Clarendon Road, between Beechen Grove and High Street, and High Street, between Clarendon Road and Market Street [NOTE: Exemptions would apply for local buses and vehicles gaining access to properties within the Zone or accessible only from the Zone]
• High Street, between Market Street and King Street, and Market Street, for 10 metres south-west of its junction with High Street [NOTE: the restrictions in this pedestrian zone would remain as they currently are].
People with disabilities • Removal of existing shared use blue badge/ loading bay outside No. 46 to 52 (Wetherspoon’s) High Street.
• Six new blue badge bays have been installed on Church Road.
• Two new blue badge bays on Wellstones (behind the High Street).
Local businesses • The existing shared use taxi/loading bay outside of Nos. 60 to 64 (Barclay’s Bank) will be replaced with a loading bay operating between midnight and 10am.
• The existing loading bay in High Street, outside No. 73 (HSBC) will be extended to run outside Nos. 73 to 77.
• Waiting and loading to be prohibited at all times except in designated bays.
Cyclists • The proposal includes a mandatory contra-flow cycle lane in the carriageway of Clarendon Road running from High Street to Beechen Grove.
Roads and access • Rising bollards to be installed in Clarendon Road south-west of Watford House Lane and in High Street north-west of Market Street to ensure only authorised vehicles have access.
• Clarendon Road to become one way from Beechen Grove to High Street.
Taxis • Relocation of the four vehicle part time taxi bay away from the High Street.
• A new five vehicle full time rank has been established in Wellstones just behind Nos. 38 to 40 High Street.
• The existing part time feeder taxi rank on New Street has become full time.
