Electric Vehicle Charging Points

London Borough of Tower Hamlets is installing electric vehicle charging points and would like your feedback.

Closes Monday 31st December 2018 Submit your comments

Background

Improving air quality by reducing emissions from road traffic is a crucial priority for Tower Hamlets. Dangerous levels of pollution in the air we breathe has major health implications, especially for children and vulnerable adults. Providing an accessible network of electric vehicle charging points will play a key role in encouraging the uptake of electric vehicles. This is vital if we are to deliver air quality improvements and achieve the Mayor of London’s target for a zero emission transport network by 2050.

We are already seeing a dramatic growth in electric vehicle ownership and by 2025 expect to be supporting over 3300 electric vehicles in the borough. This will be accelerated by a policy from the Mayor of London which will ensure that all new taxis are electric from 2018.

The London Borough of Tower Hamlets is supporting its residents who wish to switch to an electric vehicle. To do this we are going to provide a variety of electric charging options across the borough, making it easy and convenient to own an electric vehicle.

When introducing this infrastructure, we will endeavour to protect parking spaces which are designated residents use only. However, some provision will be required for passing traffic and visitors who need to top up their batteries. Any changes will need to work within the constraints of the existing Controlled Parking Zone restrictions.

Earlier in the year we consulted residents on where they would like to see electric vehicle charging points installed. The council is now proposing a number of locations for the first phase of installations, informed by this consultation.

Respond to consultation

The council is currently consulting on ten charging point locations. Residents in the areas surrounding proposed chargers have received letters explaining the details and consulting them on the plans.

If residents are in favour of the proposals, then electric vehicle charging points will be installed as soon as possible after the close of the consultation.

Participate in lamp column charger trial

The council is carrying out a trial of lamp post charging points at seven residential locations around the borough. If you have received a leaflet informing you about a trial in your area and would like to participate, please enter your name and contact details in the form below and we will be in contact.
