Overview

Tower Hamlets Council is committed to making the borough a safer place for all road users by delivering a range of street improvements in the area; intending to benefit pedestrians, cyclists, drivers and public transport users alike.

Cable Street and the surrounding area are currently being reviewed to provide a safer road environment for the local community, responding to residents concerns about rat running and the problems it causes in local streets.

One of the problems you’ve told us about is the level of traffic trying to avoid the traffic lights at Butcher Row/A13 junction. It cuts through Pitsea, Caroline and Ratcliffe Cross Streets from the A13 to join Butcher Row to get to the Highway/Limehouse Link Junction causing safety hazards and nuisance to local properties

What is proposed?

Tower Hamlets Council wants to introduce a right turn ban from Cable Street onto Butcher Row.

We are also building out the existing footway to replace the right turn traffic lane which will also facilitate space for proposed new cycle parking and planting.

The proposed improvements aim to significantly reduce traffic by eliminating a rat-run to avoid the Commercial Road/ Butcher Row junction, reduce vehicle speeds and create an improved pedestrian environment.
