Liveable Streets

Our Liveable Streets programme will improve the look and feel of public spaces in your neighbourhood. By creating a better environment, we can make it more convenient to get around by foot, bike and public transport. This programme will run until 2022.

What is Liveable Streets?

Liveable Streets is a Tower Hamlets Council programme designed to enhance liveability across the borough through improving public spaces, changing traffic conditions and discouraging anti-social behaviour.

These improvements will be determined by community feedback, suggestions and co-design workshops. We want to hear from as many people as possible to best represent the wants and needs of the community in our designs.

Which areas are included?

Seventeen areas across the borough have been identified for development. These are being split into four phases as follows:

  • Phase one: Bethnal Green, Bow and Wapping
  • Phase two: Brick Lane, Barkantine, Shadwell, Old Ford Road West, Mile End West and East Ferry St Johns
  • Phase three: Southern Grove, Cephas Street, Burdett Road South and Teviot and Brownfield
  • Phase four: Spindrift and Island Gardens, Bethnal Green South, Whitechapel and Aberfeldy

What’s happening now?

Consultation has ended for Bethnal Green and Wapping, and engagement has started for Bow, Barkantine and Brick Lane.
